Various Walks

Glen Nevis and Dun Deardail: 2½ hours (5 miles)

Turn right out of the park towards Fort William. Turn right onto the A82 and a mile later turn left into Glen Nevis at the mini roundabout. About ¾ mile up this road turn right into Braveheart car park. Walk through the gate and keep left along the forestry track on The West Highland Way. After 1 mile keep right at a fork and continue through the forest for a further 1½ miles and a big zig-zag until the end of the track. Continue onwards on the rough track and just before a stile turn left at the sign towards Dun Deardail. This path rises steeply beside the forest for a few 100 yards until you reach the summit of a knoll on which is the ruins of a Neolithic vitrified fort, Dun Deardail. Enjoy magnificent views of Ben Nevis and Glen Nevis. If you wish to continue further along the West Highland Way it ends in Glasgow, 100 miles along the track!

Glen Nevis Gorge and Steall Waterfall: 1½ hours (2 miles)

Turn right out of the park towards Fort William. Turn right onto the A82 and a mile later turn left into Glen Nevis at the mini roundabout. Continue on this road, which gets ever narrower until the large car park at the very end of the road. Note that this is not at the twin bridges crossing the Lower Falls, usually full of sightseers. Continue ever onwards and upwards until you can drive no more. Park and read the warning panels. They tell the truth! This walk is not for the infirm or fainthearted. It is a rocky path – not difficult but, especially in wet weather, it is slippery and a slight tumble could easily result in a fatal fall! Just follow the main path and do not deviate from it. After a ½ hour walk along the path, which clings to the walls of the gorge, it suddenly opens out into alpine fields with a magnificent Steall Waterfall in full view. To get to it you will have to traverse the wire rope bridge. 3 thin wire strands – easily crossed by an able bodied adult with due care and respect, but NOT for small children. The dog will have to swim across. Return after this splendid little adventure by the same route.

Nevis Range and Leanachan Forest: Various distances/times

Turn right out of the park towards Fort William. Turn left onto the A82 towards Inverness and after 3 miles turn right towards Nevis Range Ski Centre. Follow that road and park in the ski centre car park. A huge variety of waymarked walks and cycle tracks are available and, for the more adventurous, there are several (and a café) at the top of the cable car.

Inchree Waterfall Circuit: ¾ hour (1¼ miles)

Turn right out of the park towards Fort William. Turn right onto the A82 and continue south. About 8 miles after Fort William you will pass the entrance to Corran Ferry on the right. Just ½ a mile later turn left where signed into Inchree. In the little village the road bends to the right and terminates at the car park. You have a good choice of well marked paths, leaflets available, but the best is the one for the waterfall which, in wet weather, is absolutely stupendous and enormous. It is in fact a series of 5 waterfalls and rapids. Leave the car park and take the path on the right. Follow this upwards to the waterfall viewpoint. Continue onwards and turn left when you reach the forestry road. This will lead you back to the car park.
